Head instructor Sensei Sean Kilgus, aka "The Jiu-Jitsu Guy" has over 20 years of martial arts training. He began training at the age of 5 in the art of Karate in his home town near Charleston, South Carolina in which he currently holds a black belt.
At age 12 Sensei Sean began training in the art of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and currently holds a black belt in the art. Sensei Sean began fighting in full contact MMA (ultimate fighting) at the age of 15. While trying to become a Mixed Martial Arts fighter Sensei Sean spent much time learning many other arts i.e. Judo, Muay Thai, Boxing, and Wrestling which he incorporates in his instruction.
At age 20 Sensei Sean relocated to Atlanta to train with a highly respected martial arts school to continue his education in Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. During the course of training to become a pro fighter Sensei Sean has even spent a time training and living with MMA legend Ken Shamrock.
Sensei Sean Professors are legends in the field of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts. He is proud to have trained under Professor Roan Jucao Cornero, who began his BJJ training under Carlson Gracie and received his black belt under the Gracie system. World Jiu-Jitsu Academy is an honored affiliate of the Roan Jucao Jiu-Jitsu Association. Sensei Sean has also been trained by Professor Kuzeka Muniz, who received his black belt from Carlos Gracie, Jr.
With a stellar foundation in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Karate, Sensei Sean settled into a teaching role for the same school he moved to Atlanta to fight with. At first he started doing this as way to be able to focus on his own fighting career and taught only kids. While working with the kids program Sensei regained his passion for being a martial artist vs. focusing on the fighting aspect of the sport. " I remembered what it was like being a kid and coming up in the arts and how it affected my life in so many positive ways that it became more important for me to pass that on to others than to worry about my own career" says Sensei Sean. Seeing the ability Sensei Sean had to teach kids eventually landed him a head coaching role for his school. Sensei Sean enjoyed much success while teaching for this school not only in creating a great competition team but also by having much success helping change peoples lives which was his life long goal.
Having found a way to finally have positive affects on peoples lives Sensei Sean settled into becoming a full time teacher vs becoming a fighter. At one point the school he trained with had a change of ownership and change of goals. Shifting focus from helping people and teaching the arts to training fighters and being a more of a corporate style business the school was no longer the kind of place Sensei Sean wanted to be at. Seeking to continue having the ability to have such a positive roll on peoples lives Sensei Sean eventually decided it would be best to create his own center. With permission from his home school in South Carolina he opened World Jiu-Jitsu Academy where he currently teaches in Cumming, GA.
